Accompanying textArtist and teacher Calvin Collins has lived in Honolulu since 2000, earning an MFA in painting from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa in 2006. His artwork often incorporates bold imagery combined with unusual media, such as glitter, resin, gun powder, and Swarovski crystals. For Illuminati Collins depicts numerous black birds perched at the top of trees, at what appears to be the end of the day. The chaotic tangled web of branches is silhouetted against the gridded sky where the crystals twinkle like organized stars. The artist states, "This painting is part of an ongoing series that attempts to address a type of harmonious convergence between chaos and order."
