Accompanying textAaron Padilla received his BFA in painting and printmaking from Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Washington, and an MFA in ceramics from the University of Hawai'i at Manoa. His work challenges conventional uses of media; in this case, wood. Padilla stretches our expectations by reworking pinewood to form a woven pattern, inspired by instructional diagrams for weaving patterns and knots. "Eight" belongs to a body of work made of dimensional lumber. The artist cuts his pinewood into small, angled segments, and then re-glues the pieces to articulate curves that are later sanded smooth. He states, "I am inspired in how designs can be simple and complex at the same time. I try to reflect this duality through form and technique."
