Accompanying textAs a teenager in California, Brazilian-born Sergio Goes took up photography as a hobby. After exploring other career paths, he moved to Hawai'i in 1989 and turned back to photography as an expressive outlet, becoming a successful photodocumentarian. His photos explore island life outside of the stereotypical images often depicted Hawai'i. Goes instead turned his camera lens upon local residents and real island culture rather than beaches and sunsets. An avid freediver himself, this photograph is a true blending of his passions. Taken while freediving off the island of Hawai'i, his athletic subject dives fearlessly into blue abyss, the only guide a thin float line. Sergio Goes contributed heavily to the documentation of a diverse island lifestyle rich in adventure and tradition. He knew just where to look.
