A graduate of McKinley High School, he left Hawai`i in 1948 to study at the California School of Fine Arts and the Art Students League, New York. Abe returned to Hawai`i in 1950, and met renowned artist Isami Doi, who became both mentor and personal friend. He received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1963. Throughout his long and prolific career Abe explored his vision of the cycle of life, growth, re-growth and the human form with a focused dedication. The tree became a signature motif for him, with its branches reaching and entwined, at times formed by abstract calligraphic marks.
