Accompanying textNative Hawaiian painter and teacher Mealaaloha Bishop takes inspiration from the people and landscape of Hawaiʻi. She celebrates this sense of place through the use of bright colors and expressive brushstrokes, along with her choice of subject matter. The artist explains, “Art helps create ways of knowing and understanding. It helps us express our internal mo’olelo through external expression. Visual literacy explains through creative processes our visions of how we see the world and our relationship to the environment.” In Kalo 2, Bishop uses vibrant blues and greens combined with strong, rhythmic lines to depict the plants she grows with her family and community.
