Accompanying textCeramists Kate and Will Jacobson have been collaborating artistically since 1979 and moved to Hawaiʻi Island in 2001. Throughout these many years, their work has explored both the power and the fragility of the natural world. About Rising From The Sea, they explain that this sculpture “embodies the reverence and awe we feel for the islands of Hawaiʻi. Volcanic lands are continually changing and reminding us of the impermanence of life. We choose to work in the raku technique deliberately. Rather than trying to control and manipulate the natural world, we embrace the constant flux of materials, thoughts and emotions. We accept change as an ally and acknowledge it with grace and humility.”
