Accompanying textSculptor David Kiyabu grew up on the Windward side of Oahu and received a BFA in sculpture from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa in 2003. He continued his studies in Pietrasanta, Italy, focusing on stone carving lessons from the local craftsmen. In general, Kiyabu’s sculptures focus on the media and the simplicity of form while suggesting more complex ideas. About his inspiration for Nomads, Kiyabu explains, “Fish move great distances instinctively to locate dense biomasses for their survival. The release from its mother into the wild happens early on, and nomadic young calves develop characteristics that allow them to swim for miles to find food sanctuaries. This piece was inspired by their survival strategies in hunting for food and in turn also becoming prey. Their calculated and acrobatic precision to catch and avoid being caught are quickly learned in their juvenile stages.”
