Accompanying textRichard Frooman (1930–2014) was born in Chicago and received a BFA from the Art Institute of Chicago, IL, in 1952. During his long and prolific painting career he explored a variety of themes and styles but became most well-known for his portraiture. He often included details or glimpses of his subjects’ home interiors, which created a more intimate narrative, as exemplified here in the painting Triad. This work was the result of several months of painstaking applications of layered pigment in order to capture his wife and child in a highly detailed depiction that feels both odd and familiar. The title Triad refers to a group of three connected people or things, and in this case either includes the artist or the viewer to complete the scene.
